This series began as I was driving away from the vacuum repair shop. A story was just ending (on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict), and the reporter concluded by saying, “and what happens next is not yet clear.” I was struck by such a frank admission of the intractable nature of things.
These collages (from a larger series) are made on the pages of a badly-damaged 17th-century copy of The Golden Ass. In the story, Lucius learns a little bit of magic and foolishly tries to use it to his advantage; predictably, this backfires, and he’s turned into an ass. This group of works is a rambling meditation on the ways we try to predict or control or prepare for the future. Sometimes, though, we abandon these efforts and settle for being distracted from the question.
